I am so surprised. Totally surprised. Really. My son and I went to the town dump as I promised earlier. It was our reality check after our weekend at the Hamptons. First of all, the Iowa girl in me couldn't get over how civilized the town dump really was. It's not a landfill (of course not, silly Iowa girl - this is Westport, afterall). It's a really cool oversized trash compactor. And get this - it was free. Yes. FREE. Wow. I had been avoiding taking things to the dump because I was used to a load of trash in the SUV costing about $20 to dump. That just seemed sort of silly to spend money to throw something away, so I tried to sneak things in the garbage cans little by little to see if they would be taken away. Finally, I had some things that just had to go. So I took them. Of course, I went in my shorts, blouse and glass bead adorned little sandals. Not the smartest fashion statement for the dump. Actually, maybe it was. A man helped my son and me unload our trash. There were other customers, but I must have appeared to be the damsel in distress.
As we left I told my son. "You know, you'll never find another woman quite like your Mom."
I think he was inwardly chanting "Thank God for that!"
I followed it up with a little thought "How many women actually go to the dump, like it and get excited because it's so cool and FREE?"
His eyes rolled. But seriously, he was quite the trooper and mother's big helper today. We got a great deal of stuff done today including one yarn related purchase. I went to Linen N' Things to get 10 Yaffa Blocks to store my OOCOYS (Out of Control Overflowing Yarn Stash). Ah... I remember the days when I would have thought one of these containers filled with a few skeins of yarn was an out of control yarn stash. Sigh. I was so naive then.
