Take Me Back to The Good Ol' Days

My friend Mary sent me these pictures of her Barbie dolls of yesteryear.  Her mother knit clothes for her dolls using knitting patterns from the 1950s.

Look at this great dress with a blue jacket with white trimmed collar.  Gotta love that hat!

How about this little number?  Is it a sweater under a coat or is it a collar and sleeves for this great coat.  Love this hat, too.

What treasures do you have lurking in your Barbie doll suitcases of yesteryear?

My mother used to knit for my dolls too come to think of it. I must someday go and find them. I think they're in the attic :)

Those are fantastic! I remember my mother sewed a little dress out of a colorful cotton print for one of my Barbies when I was little. Mine were never as stylish as that lucky doll though!

Your friend's mom was an awesome knitter!

A non-knitting friend posted pictures of her Barbies on her blog yesterday. They looked practically new, and even had the intact boxes with them. She clearly did not spend as many hours playing with her Barbies as I did with mine. Of course, her's are probably of monetary worth today, whereas mine's only value is sentiment.

I know that Barbie has taken a bad rap in recent years for setting too high of standards of beauty for young girls. That may be true, but I wouldn't trade for the hours I spent playing with my friends and our Barbies. Though the clothes I hand sewed for mine look VERY primitive (to me today), I remember being very proud of my accomplishments.

Neat post, Jennifer! :-)

Oh I love it! Reminds me of the many late night hours I spend knitting & crocheting outfits for my daughter's doll for Christmas one year. Sometimes until 1:00am. She was a well dressed doll!
