Happy May Day! It's nearly impossible to believe that today is May 1st. It's a day that conjures up happy childhood memories of leaving May Day baskets on neighbors doorsteps, ringing the bell, and running away before they could see who left the surprise for them. Today I hosted book club at my house and offered up my very own version of May Day Baskets in the form of yummy chocolate covered pretzels from Balducci's. Yum. Yum.

Okay, I could eat all of those pretzels. Mmmmmm.. No May day baskets here, but flowers are abundant and welcome everywhere. Lots of neat birds migrating through as well.

My sister and I used to pick our own flowers and leave them on the doorstep and ring the doorbell for mom. She said she loved to hear our giggles from around the corner of the house:P

What a joy to find someone else who remembers May baskets. Ours were cone shaped, with a long loop handle. May flowers (often violets) were featured, along with a small sweet.

I've never ever received a May basket. I've wanted one for a long time but I think the custom must have died out in this area.
