My nephew Javi is in Iraq for his third tour with the Marines. I'm trying to be a better aunt this time and sending him care packages every so often. He asked for oatmeal cookies - said they were his favorite - so I sent a batch last month. They seemed to arrive just fine. Then Javi wrote and said he loved Grandma Marienne's chocolate oatmeal cookies because they were so easy to make - that he and his brother would often make them after school for a snack.
Priscilla (aka Javi's Mom) informs me that yes, the boys would make a batch of cookies, but they'd be gone before bedtime. Sounds about right. That's the way I remember it in my house, too. If you'd like to try these at your house - click HERE for the recipe.
As soon as these cookies cool, they're being shipped to Iraq. I think these will definitely crumble, but they'll still taste good and bring back some memories of home.
Enjoy Javi. Stay safe. Semper fidelis, from Aunt Jennifer

Jennifer,
Do you know if the soldiers still want beanie babies to hand out to the kids. I read this somewhere. I have about 30 in perfect condition with tags on. Do you have a way of asking him or someone? I'd love to donate them to a good cause.

Yum! That reminds me that I need to send cookies to DD for college finals.
I'm behind with my reading, but wanted to let you know I really enjoyed the tour of Sioux City sites!

Those are one of my favorite cookies. I'm sure they'll be much appreciated.

Another lucky nephew...I don't think a Wallaby would be good for him but the cookies will surely be a hit.
Want to knit sometime soon?

The sight of these cookies brought back so many memories. My mom would make them when we were young and we called them no-bake cookies. When she started dropping them onto the waxed paper, she had to fight us off because we would try to grab them while they were still warm. Your nephew will love them, for sure.

Those look yummy. I make some similar called mountain bar cookies. The difference is peanut butter and coconut. That is so sweet to send them to your nephew in Iraq. It is these little reminders this time of year that makes us remember family.
