While I was home this past week, my niece and nephews were very emphatic about wanting to learn to knit. There are only three places to get yarn in town, Michaels, Hobby Lobby and Wal-Mart, so we went to Wally World and purchased some cotton yarn and needles and found some time one morning for a lesson in the basics of knitting.
Here are my students who are 10, 9 and 8 respectively. Look at how eager they are to learn!
Here I am guiding P's hands with the well-known verse:
In through the front door
Once around the back
Out through the window
Off jumps Jack!
Here's C practicing his knitting with a very determined mindset.
At 8, G has some big shoes to fill. She was named after our Grandma who taught me to knit.
Here's P, who quickly mastered his knitting by repeating the verse out loud every step of the way.
After about an hour, all three had managed to knit a few inches with great success. Look at those smiles on their faces! I'm so thrilled to teach them and have them enjoy the process. I know that they'll be knitting socks before you know it. Maybe one day, they'll knit a pair of socks for Aunt Jennifer. Wouldn't that be the cat's meow?

Yay! That's the closest thing to knitting elves that I've ever seen...you know, the elves that come during the night and finish projects for you!

They will always remember who taught them to knit. I hope they all knit you socks.

Yay! This post makes me happy! I helped teach some third graders at my kiddos' school to knit and it was such a thrill! My daughter (11) has also caught the knitting bug and is participating in her first craft fair with two of her friends.

I sometimes think I'm the only person who never actually learned that darn verse! They all look so happy!
