For the longest time, I didn't have a Nativity set amongst my Christmas decorations.
As a child, almost every family I knew, had a Nativity set. I especially admired those families that had a Hummel collectible set. Basically, they received a starter set (Jesus, Mary and Joseph) with a stable as a wedding gift and every year after, they would add a new adornment to the set. Not a bad way to collect these. A 16-piece set of the Hummel Nativity sells for more than $2,500 on eBay these days.
As a child, my friend Aimee and I were given some burlap, felt, glue, and a sewing kit by her Grandma and encouraged to create a banner of the Three Wise Men. I often remember that and think about making one again one day. I don't have a picture of the one we made in the early 1970s, but it looked something like this.
So far, this all seems good, right? How is it possible that this causes me to fail as a parent? Because this is my Nativity Set that I bought a few years back.
Yes - that's a Fisher Price Little People Nativity Set. I think it's so adorable and whimsical. It sits as the centerpiece of my kitchen island. Yesterday, Secundogeniture was sitting at the counter eating a snack and playing with the figurines. He suddenly looked at me and asked "Why do you have this?"
It's a Nativity!
The birth of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.
Ugh! I have failed as a parent.
He gave me that look that only a teenager can give.
Then I remembered the gift he gave me last year for Christmas...
Maybe I'm not such a failure as a parent after all.
Yes - it's a Peanuts Nativity set. Did I mention that I love whimsical?
O little town of Bethlehem
How still we see thee lie
Above thy deep and dreamless sleep
The silent stars go by
Yet in thy dark streets shineth
The everlasting Light
The hopes and fears of all the years
Are met in thee tonight
For Christ is born of Mary
And gathered all above
While mortals sleep, the angels keep
Their watch of wondering love
O morning stars together
Proclaim the holy birth
And praises sing to God the King
And Peace to men on earth
