Happy Fourth of July!

July_2008_065

I hope you have a great holiday with friends and family and fantastic fireworks.  Westport celebrates its fireworks before the actual 4th of July, so we watched them last night on Compo Beach.  It was a great event.  I took Primogeniture and 5 of his closest friends to the beach along with Secundogeniture (who was thrilled to be hanging out with the big boys).

July_2008_029

And today, we had lunch at Matsu Sushi in Westport with our dear friends Angel & Erik (you remember them from Tanzania fame).

July_2008_066 July_2008_067 July_2008_070

After that we wandered down to Starbucks and when we returned to our cars, we noticed these little Public Service Announcement guys around town.  Not sure what purpose they served, but we sure had fun with our photographic scavenger hunt.

I hope you all had a wonderful Independence Day.

Thoughts and Prayers

My hometown Boy Scout Council in Iowa was hit by a tornado last night.  My heart and prayers go out to the families of the four casualties.  I also cried tears of joy as the personal stories and news stories about heroism, quick thinking and preparedness come to light.  My sister forwarded me some personal stories from her sons' Cub Scout leader regarding the local area teenage Scouts which made me so proud of these young heroes.

Please keep these families in your prayers.

Oh Daffy Day

Spring is here.  I know this because a patch of daffodils have sprouted.

April_2008_003

Of course, this is in the front of the house.  The hundreds and hundreds of daffodils I planted several years back for my birthday only came up one year.  This patch has been here since the previous owners and it comes up bright and beautiful every year without fail.

If You Can't Eat Them, Knit Them

Adam's at it again.  He sent me a great slew of knitting links.  Here is one of my household's favorite candies Peeps.  What's not to love.  Marshmallows covered in sugar.  But sugar is my enemy, so I appreciated this link to some Knit Peeps.

I wonder if I should knit up some chocolate bonbons, too?

Take a Knitting Survey

Deb at Chappy's Mom is considering setting up a subscriber-based online knitting tutorial service.  Won't you help her out by visiting her blog and taking her survey?  She's offering prizes (contest style) for everyone who takes the survey.

A Mom's World

I can't stop laughing.  My friend shared this William Tell Overture for Moms with me today.  I simply must share it with every mother out there.  Anita Renfroe has managed to take everything that a mother says during the course of a 24-hour period and condensed it to under 3 minutes.  If you're not laughing hysterically, you must have perfect angels for children.

I love being a Mom.

I say about 80% of these things every single day!  (PS - BF and the boys have all confirmed this).

My Kind of Building

Trois Rivieres has some interesting architecture.  I like the French Canadian influence.  I like the restaurants.  I like the shops.  Can someone please explain to me why there are NO drug stores or places where you can buy food (fruit, snacks, etc), but there must be at least 2-3 beauty salons or barbers on every single block?  Did I go off topic?  Sorry.  I LOVED the fact that there were hardly any chain stores in Trois Rivieres.  No Starbucks!  It meant going to an artisinal coffee shop and some wonderful Mom & Pop restaurants.  While we walked along the city streets, this building's name caught my eye.

Is this building named BLOG PAGE?  Gotta love it.

Feeling Better Now

I just wanted to let you know that I'm feeling much better - about 85% normal.  Not enough to go to the Hamptons this weekend as originally planned, but so much better than the past few days.  At any rate, I wanted to thank you all for your get well wishes.  They really helped a great deal.  I was able to get a lot of fluids in me today, which improved things a great deal - I had really gotten quite dehydrated.  I think I really lost 5 lbs of water, but who's counting?  I wanted to share a Get Well Card that Secundogeniture made for me.  These are just some of the moments that make me just love being a Mom.

The Craziness of Year End

I don't know how it happens every year, but from Mother's Day to the end of the school year (which in the Northeast is about 6 weeks), there's so much craziness that I wonder how any of us do it.  I haven't had any time for myself in weeks!  The good news is that I can almost see the light at the end of the tunnel.  Scouts is wrapping up for the school year.  My other huge volunteer job is almost over.  Summer camp is approaching.  The camp physicals are completed.  PTA volunteer projects are coming to a close.  The Prayer Shawl group is calling it quits for the summer.  Unfortunately, all this means that I haven't had any time to actually knit!  I'm going through a case of extreme knitting withdrawal.  So instead of a knitting picture, I present some of Primogeniture's pictures of Wilma with her new favorite toy - a tennis ball

Wilma_2007_002

Our favorite game with Wilma is to throw one of her toys onto the bean bag chair in the sunken living room.  She catapults dogapults off the top stair and sails into the bean bag chair to retrieve her toy.  It's hilarious to see.  We laugh every time.  Primogeniture managed to snap a picture of her in mid-dogapult.

Crop Circles

I have Crop Circles on my back.  Lots of them.  At least that what BF tells me.  I'll spare you the pictures.  I've been having some sort of systemic issue going on that is causing me to itch incessantly.  It started on the crown of my head and my shins several months ago.  The doctor told me I had dry skin.  That really made me mad.  I hate it when doctors are condescending and don't even listen.  This past week I went to see an accupuncturist for the first time.  It was great!  After talking to me indepth, she cut to the chase.  "Jennifer, you can't eat sugar.  Period."  I don't know what she did during the acupuncture and cupping (which caused the funny crop circle marks) session, but I haven't even had a craving for sugar since.  Wow!  She's trying to help me detox my liver from all the sugar and artificial sweeteners and other toxins that have accumulated over time.  I used to be a Caffeine Free Diet Coke junkie until about 2 months ago.  Anyway,  I'm hoping it will work in the long term as the itching is becoming chronic, which I'm certain is nature's way of telling me to make some changes in my life.  I think my diet is the first factor and stress is the second.  This constant scratching is even starting to get in the way of my fun.

Last night BF and I went here for a little weekend getaway.  While BF played games, I went to the spa.  Unfortunately, when he got back to the room at 9:00 p.m. I was covered in hives, so we drove home last night.  (Kat - we did stop at Mystic Pizza for dinner and I thought of you!)  I took my Allegra as soon as I got home and went to sleep.  I've only ever used this medicine for the stuffy head allergy symptoms before.  I've never had hives before this itching issue began.  It really got in the way of my knitting.  In fact, I only managed to knit this much all day.

Img_1958

I'm not sure what these are going to be - but I thought I'd start the basic cuff.  I was going to make the Victorian Socks for this month's Six Sox KAL, but the pattern just wasn't speaking to me, so I frogged it and decided to look through my sock books for another pattern that calls my name.  I'm knitting them on my US size 1 Turbo Addi's with 60 sts Cast On.  The lovely lilac yarn was a birthday gift from James.  It's a New Zealand sock yarn.  Isn't it yummy?  Hopefully I can concentrate on knitting the socks and not on the itching.  Fortunately, this morning I am hive-free.  I'm still itchy.  I'm still off the sugar.  Thankfully, the hives are gone.

22 Minutes

It takes me 22 minutes to catch up on my Bloglines feeds.  That's in the HOV lane where there is no time for stops, let alone comments.

How long does it take you to get through your bloglines?

Subscribe to Major Knitter wth Bloglines

I finally managed to put a button on the left sidebar which will allow you to subscribe to my Bloglines feed.  I've been a member for ages, but wasn't really up to speed on how to use this service.  (I hope I got this right).  It looks like this.

Sub_modern2

Won't you take a moment and subscribe to my blog's feeds by clicking on the button in the left sidebar?  You'll get notified of all my updates.  What a great concept.

Watch out technology superhighway.  I just got my driver license.  This could be a very dangerous thing.

De-Lurking Alert

A few months ago I changed my Typepad settings to block all spam and make it necessary for everyone to log on to a Typepad account in order to leave comments.  It was an important step as I was simply getting inundated with harmful SPAM that was penetrating my filters.  Many of you told me that even with your Typepad accounts, you were unable to leave comments.

As of today, you may feel free to de-lurk.  I have adjusted my Typepad settings once again to allow comments.  The server has upgraded some options for filtering spam on their end, so I hope that will help alleviate the problem.

In the meantime, won't you please leave a comment?  I've missed you.

Two Firsts that Deserve a Moment of Silence

This past week two "Female Firsts" made the obituary news.  While I didn't know either of these women, both were amazing ladies who did things for our country that are near and dear to my heart.

Megan M. McClung - Major, United States Marine Corps - First female Marine to die in combat - EVER

Catharine Pollard - Scoutmaster, Boy Scouts of America - First female scoutmaster in the United States

Please take a moment and read about them and say a prayer for the families and loved ones they left behind.  God bless!

Post Script

I bet you've noticed that I've been lumping my posts together of late.  I've been really busy with everything going on (Wilma, family life, Boy Scouts, Cub Scouts, volunteer work, travel, visitors, and the PTA knit-a-thon) , which has left me little to no time for posting.  I've loved nearly every minute of my busy life, but the blog has suffered in the meantime.  I've been saving up the posts and then dating them accordingly.  I hope you'll bear with me until things calm down.  In the meantime, keep checking back for updates (and then scroll down for a week's worth of posts at once!)

You Know You Knit Too Much...

When you grab the Lucky Charms for a late night snack and get excited because you're certain they're giving away 4-ply yarn inside.  You'd be confused, too, right?

Nasty Knitters Nabbed

Julie sent me this hilarious link about a yarn store in Atlanta, Georgia.  Check it out by clicking here.  You can even watch the newscast and really be surprised to find out about how two ladies supported their yarn habit.

Now, personally, I often think that buying yarn that just gets added to my ever growing yarn stash without being knit up is a crime.  But this story takes the cake.... or the Cascade, or the cashmere, or whatever they can get their little hands on.  I wonder if they'll be knitting up some bright orange jumpsuits to wear in prison?

Mother's Day Gift From My Boys

My day started out great, had a fulfilling middle, and ended with neverending beauty.  Primogeniture and I went to the local nursery Gilberties to get some perennials for the garden.

Gilberties

Here is a shot of the deep pink/red peony bush.  I got one from each boy.  Now I just need to find a sunny spot in the yard to plant my gifts.

Thurgood

BF delighted me to an afternoon matinee and dinner tonight.  We went to the Westport Country Playhouse to see James Earl Jones in Thurgood.

Thurgood_1

I really enjoyed the show and have decided to learn more about this Supreme Court Justice.  His life is very fascinating.  If any of you come to Westport to see the show, please let me know.  I'd love to get together for a quick knit and coffee.

There's No Place Like Home

As much as I love traveling and seeing people I love so dearly, after every single trip, regardless if it lasts one day or one week, I'm always so happy to be home again.  I know I've been doing a lot of traveling lately, but there's really no place I'd rather be than at home with my loved ones.  Speaking of which, BF gets home in a few hours.  I'd better go get ready. Happy.  Happy.

Must.Have.Coffee.NOW!

I woke up this morning and suddenly realized I had used up all the coffee beans in the house.  There's nothing left.  No regular coffee beans.  No decaffeinated coffee beans.  No holiday gift package of coffee grounds.  Nothing.  Zip.  Zilch.  Nada.

That is not a very nice thing to discover when you wake up at 5:50 a.m. so I'm off to Starbucks for my fix.  Wish me luck.

Time for a New Look

I decided it was time for a new look.  I went to Katsu for a cut and color this morning.  I got a few inches taken off the back and edges, in the end, I opted for no color, and got diffused for a soft, tousled, gently curled look.  I haven't changed my look in ages.  I'm actually quite happy with the new look despite the fact that Secundogeniture thought I looked like I was having a 'bad hair day' and Primogeniture seconded that.  Boys! Pffffftttt!

April Fool's Day

Did I ever tell you how gullible I am?  Well, I am.  Really.  In fact, I was busy blogging in the wee hours of the morning on April 1st, when Secundogeniture woke up, quietly crept up behind me and then collapsed on the floor behind me.  He started crying and as I got up and went to him, I thought to myself "Oh, I should have hemmed his new pajamas.  He tripped on them." As I was imagining a trip to the Emergency Room, it also occured to me that "Maybe the waxed floors were polished just a bit too much and he slipped on them."  Just then, he looked up at me and smiled "April Fool's Day!"  Boy was I fooled!  In the afternoon, while I napped, Primogeniture found some yarn and tied my feet.

April_1_weekend_015

How about you?  Were you fooled today?

Knitting Grammar

I prefer to conjugate knit much the same way that I would conjugate the verb quit.  I say

  • I knit every day.
  • I knit yesterday.
  • I have knit for over twenty years.

BF has been challenging me that the past tense should be knitted.  (Based on my "quit" rule, I would never say "I quitted", so why would I say "I knitted"?)

  • I knit every day.
  • I knitted yesterday.
  • I have knitted for over twenty years.

I've been troubled by this.  One of my undergraduate degrees is in linguistics, which doesn't make me a grammarian, but does give me a wee bit more confidence in my English grammar skills.  Today, I woke up and went to dictionary.com.  Lucky for me, both options are listed, and MINE is listed FIRST (which is generally considered the preferred usage).

Which do you prefer?  Why?

Hand Knit Curious George Pattern

I've had several requests lately for a hand knit pattern of Curious George.  I guess when people Google "knit Curious George pattern" they automatically end up at my site because of my mascot.

Does anyone know of a pattern out there to knit your very own Curious George?

Grandiose Day Dreams

I was knitting while watching the women's biathalon in the Olympics this morning.  What a great sport.  I start thinking - I can definitely shoot a rifle (my Marine Corps training comes in handy) and  I can also run and cross country ski (at a beginner level).  So as I knit and watch the Olympics, my mind starts to wander.  I start day dreaming about what it would be like to be an Olympic athlete.  I hear the sports announcers mention that most of the best biathletes have trained with the military.  I think to myself - "Hey!  So have I!"  Then I start imagining myself training for the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver.  I do notice that some athletes have aerodynamic hats and others have every-day-run-of-the-mill hats.  I think to myself.  I'd create a Major Knitter hat for my Olympic Debut.

OK.  Wake up.  Snap out of it.  I remind myself that I'm a couch potato who didn't even accept the challenge of the Yarn Harlot's Knitting Olympic because I hate that sort of self-inflicted deadline.  Who am I kidding?

Oh well.  It was fun daydreaming.

Blizzard Bliss!

Last Saturday night we got a blizzard in Connecticut as we slept.  It really started snowing Sunday morning and by mid afternoon things looked like this.

February_2006_076

Once the wind and snow died down, I took Primogeniture, Secundogeniture and two friends sledding at the golf course behind our neighborhood.  It was a blast.

February_2006_080

Here is Secundogeniture with his friend Nick.  Don't look too closely, there's not a stitch of handknit items to be seen.  Shame.  Shame.  I know.

February_2006_079

Now it's Thursday and the snow is rapidly melting in our balmy 50 degree weather.  It was fun while it lasted.  Did you go sledding?

Thanks for All Your Prayers

I just wanted to thank everyone for all the thoughts and prayers for my Marine friend, his wife and two sons.  BF and I drove six hours to Bethesda last Wednesday, visited for a half hour, and drove home.  It was well worth it.  He's doing amazingly well.  God bless those doctors, nurses, and the entire staff at the Bethesda Naval Hospital.  The Injured Marine Semper Fi Fund, the Officer and Enlisted Wives Clubs and numerous other organizations have been incredibly supportive.  Our friends are truly in good hands. Thank you all for your thoughts, prayers and kind words of support.  I can't tell you how much it means to me.

Lots on My Plate...

My postings have been sporadic over the past few weeks and will continue to be so for the next few days.  There has been so much going on that I don't even know where to begin.  We've had a lot of joy, sorrow, sadness, excitement and hope this past week.  We had two mini-vacations, one birth, one funeral, two big birthday bashes, and heart-breaking news that one of the best Marines I ever had the honor of working with was critically injured by a roadside IED in Iraq that exploded just 10m away from him.  Tomorrow, BF and I are off to the funeral of a friend's grandmother, and then we're driving down to DC to visit our Marine friend and his family at Bethesda Naval Hospital where he was medevaced, and after that, hopefully we'll get to meet the newest baby in our circle of friends - who also happens to be in the DC area.  It's a great deal of emotion for one week.  In addition to all this, both BF and I are experiencing serious computer issues.   As you may have noticed, I've been unable to upload any pictures for some time now.  I thought it would be fixed by now.  Drat.

Please pray for our Marine friend and his family - and for all members of the Armed Services and their families.  God Bless!

Viva Las Vegas!

BF and I are in motion.  Last week we were in Florida and this weekend we're in Las Vegas.  All this traveling has been great for my knitting.  I have been working on my socks.  I turned the heel and and ready to go back and learn how to make the gusset.  In the meantime, I brought some new sock yarn with me for this trip as well as more yarn and materials to knit up more Knit Notes.  I finally got the card stock, the cellophane and other supplies to finish the Knit Notes.  They turned out better than I expected.  When I get back from Vegas, I'll be mailing out the sample cards to those who guessed correctly that I finished the Mets Baby Blanket.

Calling All London Knitters!

I can't believe I didn't think of this sooner.  As I mentioned yesterday, BF and I have a good friend who is moving to London this weekend.  He worked with us since 2000 and is a general all around good guy.  He hardly knows a soul in London and I'd love to help him meet some people.  If you live in London and would like to help me out, please email me.

21 Months Old...

I just discovered that Typepad keeps statistics on not just the overall blog, but on all individual pages of my blog for me.  Isn't that sweet of them?  I was astounded to discover just this very minute that while my home page has received 241,035 hits in the 21 months that I've hosted this blog, the overall hit count is roughly 3 times that.  I've had 760,358 hits on all pages and photo albums since I started Major Knitter.  HOLY BEJESUS!  That's a pleasant surprise.  Not surprising at all is the fact that the FREE PATTERNS photo album gets the most hits - 314,712 overall.

Now you know the rest of the story.

Winter Camping in New England - Why Not?

Camping in New England in the middle of the winter in an unheated cabin sounds great, doesn't it?  I took Primogeniture on the Troop's annual Boy Scout "Do Nothing Campout" in northern Connecticut.  It was a blast.

Scouts_january_2006_030

OK - these were the lean-tos outside our cabin.  I did not sleep in the complete outdoors (although it would have been fine).  Here's our cabin:

Scouts_january_2006_027

The Boy Scouts had a great time sledding, having snow ball fights, making tunnels in the snow, playing King of the Mountain, playing an indoor game of Axis & Allies, telling jokes, cooking and sleeping.  In the morning, the scouts made breakfast:

Scouts_january_2006_059

Not bad, huh?  It was mighty tasty, if I do say so myself.  After breakfast, we cleaned up, packed up and called it a day.  It was a great Do Nothing Campout and quite relaxing.  I did not bring my knitting with me despite a great desire to do so.  I thought Primogeniture would prefer a scouting focused weekend rather than a Mom knitting weekend.  I did wear my handknit cable cap, though.  Here's a shot from inside the snow tunnel looking out.  I was peering inside the tunnel.

Scouts_january_2006_069a

Finally, the New England woods were breathtaking.  Here's the shot from the front stoop of our cabin.

While I Was Out

These two knitting books (and some great needles) were waiting for me when I got home from my weekend trip.  See how much knitting content just happens when you least expect it?

Orange_sweater_007

I have the entire Vogue Knitting on the Go series, so this one just had to be purchased.  I'm not too sure I'll make a single thing in it though.  Nothing in this book called my name.  The Vogue Knitting Stitch Dictionary says it's Volume I - Knit and Purl.  There are 265 stitches in this book.  Most are a little off the beaten path.  That's fine by me, I have many other stitch dictionaries.  I regret giving away my "Mon Tricot 1,001 pontos" in Portuguese.  It was always a challenge to figure out the translations, but it actually had 1,001 different knitting stitches in one booklet.  What a find.  I wonder what the other volumes will bring in the Vogue Knitting Stichionary series.  I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

SALE! SALE! SALE!

BF and I ate at PF Chang's at the Galleria Mall in the DC area.  While we were waiting for our table, I wandered in to Anthropologie.  Sure enough, on their front SALE bins, I found the miniature sweaters I posted about pre-Christmas.  They were marked down 75% off, so I picked up a couple.  They only had the white ones left, but they sure look cute.  Maybe you can get some before they're all gone.

Retro Posting

JAN 3rd NOTE TO READERS - I was out of town these past four days visiting friends in the Mid-Atlantic states.  Generally, I pre-post when I'm out of town.  I didn't really want to advertise to the world that my house would be empty, you know.  I thought about doing pre-posts before heading out of town, but surprisingly enough, I ran out of time.  Now I've decided to retro-post back to Dec 31st so you can see what went on in my knitting world these past four days.

Inventory!

There's only one thing that January 1st means to most retailers around the country - INVENTORY!

BF and I completed our Mid-Atlantic driving tour by visiting our friends in Virginia and helping them with their inventory at their gorgeous stationery store in Vienna, Virginia.  If you're in the area, I highly recommend you stop by and do some shopping.  You can also place orders over the phone, so give them a call.

Dandelion Patch
211 Mill Street NE
Vienna, VA 22180

The best part about doing the inventory is showing Heidi my Knit Notes.  First, I bought these cards at my LYS to have an idea of where I should start.  Heidi gave me some great ideas about what to do and how the stationery business works.

New_year_eve_projects_005_1

These cards retail from anywhere from $2.25 for the small gift enclosure card to $8.00 for a single larger card or $8.25 for a package of 6 cards.  Each card comes in its own cellophane wrapping to keep it clean.  So I need to get to work.  Here's what I had ready before leaving home.

Since I'm always knitting anyway, I might as well support my yarn habit, right?

On The Road Again

I can't wait to get on the road again.  BF and I are heading to Philadelphia and Washington DC for the New Year's Eve weekend to visit friends.  I'm really looking forward to it.  I'm all packed.  I just need to decide what project to take.

Orange_sweater_008_1

Maybe I should take the orange yarn and make my side split collar sweater

New_year_eve_projects_002

But then, I'm having second thoughts.  I feel so heavy after all the holiday feeding frenzy. This chunky yarn will only make me feel chunkier. Maybe I should use this Cascade 220 in chocolate brown to make a lighter version of the side split collar sweater.  I got this yarn for my birthday from BF's mom.  I haven't decided what to make with it.  I though about the Ribby Cardy... but who knows.  It's all feeling like too much thinking and planning for a fun mindless road trip.

New_year_eve_projects_003

I even got this UFO out of the closet.  Remember this?  It's "BF Sweater" that I started last January.  I'm up to the neckline (knitting in the round from the bottom up).  Everyone in SNL warned me about the curse of the dreaded Boyfriend Sweater.  If you make a sweater for a boyfriend, it's sure to doom the relationship.  I don't believe in that hogwash... except I've been reluctant to finish BF sweater, so maybe I do... just a little.

New_year_eve_projects_006

You know, I think I'll just take these bags of sock and fingering weight yarn for more little knitting swatches and maybe some mini sweater ornaments.

Let's hit the road, Jack, er, I mean BF!

Whiling Away the Minutes

On Christmas day, after dropping off the boys at their father's house, BF, his father and I went out of town for a few days.  I brought along a few mini projects to work on in the car and while waiting around.

Santa_x_stitch_001

I managed to finish 3 1/2 of these Santa Claus cross stitch ornaments by Charlette's Collectibles.  I just love her Santa ornaments and have made over a dozen.  In fact, I just 'won' a huge lot of the buttons on ebay so I can keep on stitching.  I try to cross stitch a handful of homemade Christmas ornaments each year to add to the tree.  This time I altered the pattern by switching colors.  I'll probably make a few pink Santa Claus ornaments for my all pink friends out there.  We'll see.

Then I made 30 more of the little knitting swatches for the gift cards.

The orange ones I made last night while watching Kate & Leopold.  I got this DVD as a gift from The Gotham Knitter this summer and haven't taken a moment to sit down and watch it.  It was definitely the perfect night for a romantic comedy.  Sigh.  You can tell I was caught up in the movie as I only managed to knit 5 little swatches.  Normally I could have finished about 15-20 during a movie.

Merry Christmas to All

Christmas_024

Everyone contributed something to our family Christmas dinner.

BF made dessert - chocolate mousse - a family favorite.  I must admit that it's better than mine.  I just added the recipe.  Maybe you'll make it, too.

We had a very wonderful celebration and wish you and your family all the best for a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

Gift Scarves

I gave the pink stash buster scarves to secundogeniture's teacher and speech tutor.  I also whipped up a thick horizontal garter stitch scarf with the last skein of Jaeger Natural Fleece in "Coal" leftover from the mini poncho.  I started it this morning and knit most of it in the car while picking up primogeniture and waiting for secundogeniture to get out of school.  I was busy attaching the fringe to the scarf as the school bell was ringing.  I just barely managed to get the final scarf finished in time, but not early enough to take a picture before gifting it.  I think it would have been better with 2 skeins of yarn.  One skein made for a very skinny scarf.
