Summer of Socks 2008 -- Along with Some Summer Reading

Summerofsox08

Last night I finally cast on for my first pair of socks for Summer of Socks 2008 - SOS08

June_2008_101

I'm making this pair for my niece Grace - in a ladies small.

  • 1 skein Online Color 925 Dye Lot 21451
  • US Size 1
  • Pattern is Twin Rib Socks by Danni Knits
  • Cast on 66 sts according to pattern (Imagine that!  I didn't alter the pattern.)

I love Danni's pattern.  It's got great texture and is fun and easy to remember.  I'm having lots of fun knitting this pair.  What I'm not too keen on is the yarn.  I can't quite figure out why the designer put rust in this color combo.  It simply doesn't fit with the blues and greens.  My niece selected the yarn, so I hope she likes the finished socks.

And speaking of summer, it's also time to pick out 2-3 books for summer reading for the Westport School System.  Primogeniture casually tried to pick out two books that he had already read this past year for school.  I nipped that one in the bud.  Instead, he picked out three very interesting books from the vast recommended reading list.

June_2008_102

I'm quite pleased with his reading list.  He picked the Michael Durant book because they read Black Hawk Down this past spring and saw the movie.  This story is about the Army pilot who was shot down in Mogadishu in 1993.  This book was on the Social Studies reading list as was the second by Nathaniel Fick.  I started reading the Marine Corps book and before I knew it I had already read 4 chapters.  Oops!  Time to give the book back to Primogeniture.  The final book is the newest book in the Pendragon series which my son really enjoys.  There you have it.  Reading for fun and for education.  What could be better?

I'd better get some audiobooks so I can enjoy some good summer reading while knitting away on my Summer of Socks 08.  Sounds like a trip to the Westport Public Library is in order.

Commute Knitty

BF and I had dinner in the city last night.  I always look forward to dinner in Manhattan because a) it's dinner with BF; b) it's an opportunity to get dressed up and go in New York; and c) I get to knit during the commute.

Last night I managed to knit the heel flap and most of the foot on the 2x2 Ribbed Sock for my nephew.  I'm quite pleased with the results since I'm in the home stretch

June_2008_075

Hopefully I'll have this sock done by tomorrow.  Look how happy My Mister Monkey is posing with the socks.  I hope my nephew's smile will be from ear to ear, too.

Speedy Socks

I picked up the Trekking XXL that my nephew picked out at Susan's Yarn Garden in Sioux City, Iowa and already started this pair of socks.

Ellen - if you're reading - don't show these pictures to Pierce.  I'm going to hold on to these socks until all three kiddos' socks are done!

June_2008_011

It's a basic ribbed sock.  I actually used the 2x2 Rib by Charlene Schurch from Sensational Knitted Socks.  Here are the specifics:

  • CO 60 sts
  • K2, P2 ribbing throughout
  • US Size 1 40" long Turbo Addis (for Magic Loop method)
  • 1 skein Trekking XXL color 187 lot 7912
  • Future Gift

The funny thing is that the first sock only took me 2 days to knit.  That's fast even for me.  The second one is taking a bit longer, but is progressing nicely.  I made these larger so Pierce can grow into them.  I also used the ribbing so that they'll fit now and allow him to wear them next year, too.

What's the Best Way to Fix Dirty Old Socks?

If your kids come home in socks looking like this, what do you do?

Img_6478

I have the best solution.  Throw them away!  Then have your little munchkin don a pair of handknit socks.

Img_6480

Everyone loves a pair of handknit socks.  Even the family pet.

Img_6481

OK - Maybe Wilma's just a bit bored by all these socks.

Sioux-per Socks

I went home to Sioux City, Iowa this past week for a Jennifer Special (otherwise known as a 48-hour whirlwind tour).  I love going home.  This is what I saw out my airplane window.  Isn't it inspiring?

Sioux_city_trip_june_2008_002_5

While I was home, I wanted to swing by the LYS - Susan's Yarn Garden.  I was with my sister Ellen and her children, so I had my nieces and nephews pick out some sock yarn for their next pair of socks (the reward for being so grateful for their most recent pair of socks)

Sioux_city_trip_june_2008_009

In order to remember which yarn is which, I took a picture of the kiddos cuddling their specially selected sock yarn

Sioux_city_trip_june_2008_011

  • Conor selected J. Kints in the Columbus colorway
  • Pierce selected Trekking XXL in color 187
  • Gracie picked ON live in color 925

I just love Susan's Yarn Garden.  Susan is such a doll.  We chatted away and discovered that we both have a military connection - her husband and children are all Air Force, and well, you know about me.  It was a great discovery.  I was also looking for some help with my knitting lessons at the Jackson Recovery Center Women & Children's Center.  I asked Susan if she might have some knitters who would be interested in helping the Women & Children learn how to knit.  We got to talking and before I knew it she was donating yarn from her shop to my efforts.  Didn't I tell you she was a doll?  Thanks Susan.

If you're in the Sioux City, Iowa area, please go visit Susan's Yarn Garden.  You can select some yarn for your own Sioux-per Socks.

Sally's Socks Are Sensational!

My June sock club package arrived from Knitting Central and this month's designer is none other than my favorite sock maven of all - Sally Ijams.

June_2008_003_2

The Garden Anklet sock pattern is exclusive to Knitting Central Sock Club members for the first three months, then it will be available for sale at Knitting Central

Not only do I love my new sock pattern, but I adore the Jitterbug yarn and the colorway I received.  Yummy Yum Yum!  I can hardly wait to cast on for these socks.

New York City - Day Two

So Katie and I headed back into NYC today.  This time we got off in Harlem, took the subway to Lexington and 96th Street, walked across to Fifth Avenue to our first goal - The Metropolitan Museum of Art.

My sock LOVED the Met.

May_2008_097

Look!  Proof that the Egyptians were knitting thousands of years ago.  This is totally unbelieveable!

May_2008_098_2

Here's a close-up of the 3,000 year-old-sock.  They had Turbo Addis back then?  Who knew!

After The Met, Katie and I meandered through Central Park, stopping at the Boat House for a simply scrumptious lunch.  Afterwards, we continued west to Strawberry Fields and out of the park, up to the Museum of Natural History.  We enjoyed the dinosaurs, mammals and the planetarium movie in this treasure trove of all things wonderful.  If you're trying to remember what's in this museum, just watch Night at the Museum - this is the museum from that film.

345856850603_0_alb_2

After the museum, we hitched a ride in the best mode of tourist transportation around - a rickshaw.

577156850603_0_alb

We rode through Central Park then got off at The Plaza Hotel at 59th Street so we could stroll down Fifth Avenue and stare at all the spectacular window displays.  We stopped at the perfect store for tall young ladies and did some serious damage for Katie.

724866850603_0_alb

Here we are back in Westport, off the train, standing by the Saugatuck River enjoying our amazing adventure.  Sorry there were no more knitting pictures, but a 3,000 year old sock can only do so much in one day.

When I Take My Sock and My Niece Touring

My niece is in town visiting this week.  I took her to Manhattan for lunch, some sightseeing and a matinee.  Here we are in Times Square.  Here I am with my sock inside the huge Toys R Us.

May_2008_089

See my sock?

May_2008_091

Guess which matinee we went to see?  Why yes - we saw The Little Mermaid.  Katie and I enjoyed it immensely.  Disney made it seem like we were actually watching mermaids under water.  For some sneak previews, click HERE.  My favorite is Ursula in Poor Unfortunate Souls.  She was devilishly enchanting.  I'm still in awe of the set and costume designers.  I've just decided that this is what I want to be when I grow up.

May_2008_090

Some very nice ladies took this picture of Katie and me and remarked "You can really tell you're sisters."

Did I mention that they were very nice ladies?

Sockotta Simple Socks

I took primogeniture for his annual eye exam and quickly grabbed a skein of Sockotta yarn and some needles for some basic socks

Either I'm quick or the doctor was slow.  I'll let you decide which was the case.

Knitting My Way Through Italy

I took my April installment of the Knitting Central Sock Club socks with me to Italy.  I managed to cast on the socks en route to the airport and finish them before flying home.  Let me show you the fun these Rainbow Swirl Socks had while touring Italy.

Honeymoon_in_italy_2008_014

Yes - I set up shop in the bathroom in our hotel in Venice because I was suffering from some terrible jetlag - so I put the chair in the bathroom at 0200 in the morning and knit for several hours.  I was able to knit and not disturb BF.  Knitting really is the solution to jetlag.  That's what I think.

Honeymoon_in_italy_2008_062

Knitting at the coffee shop in the afternoon.  Lots of dark delicious Italian cappuccino is another remedy for jet lag.

Talk about lucky sock... now it's being held by our gondolier.

My 2nd sock is in Florence enjoying the sights and a yummy calzone.  It's a wonder I didn't gain any weight on this trip!

A Quiet Weekend Means Girly Socks for Grace

This weekend the boys were with their father and BF was on his annual baseball trip with the guys.  I had the perfect opportunity to just crash.  I caught up on my sleep Friday and Sunday.  I also watched 2 mini-series from my Netflix subscription.  I did some adult leader training with the Boy Scouts all day on Saturday.

Here's a picture of me with one of our instructors, Eric holding my Sockotta Sock.  Thanks Eric!

April_2008_001

When I got home, I watched the Jane Eyre Masterpiece Theatre Mini-Series and managed to finish the first sock.  Not bad for a day's work.

April_2008_002

  • 1 skein Sockotta Yarn
  • US Size 1 turbo addis - Magic Loop method
  • Basic Sock (Knit from the cuff down with heel flap)
  • Cast on 48 sts

These cute striped socks will be going to my niece Grace.  I think she'll like having her own pair of handknit socks since both her brothers are getting them, too.

This is the Reason I Don't Have Any Socks to Wear

I've gone a month without wearing handknit socks.  Can you believe it?  I can't.  What could possibly be the reason for such a drastic step?  It is winter in the Northeast afterall.

Am I boycotting handknit socks?

Do they itch?

Have I developed an allergy to wool?

The answer to all these questions is "No".  I've simply been too busy and haven't taken the time to do my hand wash only laundry.  Today, I couldn't stand it for a second longer.  This morning at 6:45 a.m. I decided it was time to do the laundry.  Now I have numerous pairs of socks drying on the kitchen table just waiting to be worn again.  Of course, after they're worn again, they'll end up right back in the delicates only laundry basket.  I think my socks think that's where they live.  Sigh.

Whenever I wash all my socks at once, I get a chance to look at my favorite socks, favorite patterns and favorite yarns.

  • Red Koigu KPM Cables, Cables Everywhere by Danni  from the Knitting Central Sock Club are my very favorite socks
  • The blue/green/yellow TOFUtsies socks are one of my favorite patterns.  I think it's because I knit them on ZEROS and they took me forever.  I like the feel of the TOFUtsies yarn.
  • The blue/light blue/white Sockotta yarn is my favorite yarn.  It seems to be the most durable to me.  I also like the way it feels to the touch.
  • Having said that I think I have more Koigu socks than any other because I like to knit with Koigu.  I just worry about how long the Koigu socks will wear.

How about you?  When you take a sock inventory do you evaluate your socks?

A Good (Finishing) Friday to You!

Cimg3502a

I finished my sock.  OK - I am only 50% done with the project, but I felt it was safe to share a picture of the first Skip Along Sock with you.

Img_5389

I like this sock.  The yarn is a beautiful mix of rich autumn colors.  The texture of the "Skip Along" stitch is interesting and keeps me going.

Img_5390

I especially like the garter edge on the heel flap.

Img_5391

I'm so glad that I finished this sock.  There are only 10 days left in March which means that there are only 10 days before the next installment of my Knitting Central Sock Club arrives in the mail.  Laura Hein Eckels did a fantastic job with this pattern.  It will be available on May 1st from Knitting Central.  It's an exclusive pattern to the Sock Club members for the first three months.  I hope you'll order a copy of this pattern and support one of my favorite local knitters.

Knitting Here, There and Everywhere!

It was a big day for knitting in public.  I made great progress on my Skip Along Socks

March_2008_076

I had to pick up the boys from school.  Here's my sock in the Mini Cooper with Primogeniture's science bean plant project.

March_2008_077

Here's my sock - nearly done - at the Pediatrician's office.  Our favorite Pediatrician said my head cold - aka the nasty virus that's going around is the one that lasts 10-14 days.  Ugh!  Just what I needed.  At least I'm getting lots of knitting done.

I Really Do Knit Everywhere

The good news is that I got a lot of knitting done this morning (it's only 10:50 a.m.).  The bad news is I couldn't sleep because I've got a nasty head cold that I thought was just seasonal allergies.  Ugh.  I also had a regularly scheduled doctor's appointment which I didn't dare cancel.  Instead, I took my knitting and my kleenex and went out in the rain.  I've often said that I knit everywhere and anywhere.  Here's a photo to prove it.

March_2008_075_2

I'm already nearly done with the gusset as the doctor was delayed.  The nurse felt bad and kept coming in to apologize.  I said - no need, I'll just get more knitting done.  BTW, I decided to knit the Skip Along pattern on the instep since I like the Knitting Central Sock Club Skip Along theme so much.

Major Knitter Makes Minor Progress

I've been working on my Skip Along Socks from the Knitting Central Sock Club.  Unfortunately, they've become OBE  - which in this case is military lingo for Overcome By Events.  In layman's terms, that means I've been swamped.  I really want to finish them before the next sock package arrives on April 1st, so I'm trying my darnedest to finish them.

March_2008_071

I'm about 2/3 the way done with the leg of the first sock.  I think I'll switch to all stockinette on the foot so it knits up quicker (or maybe I'll just go with the design).  Both are written into the pattern as acceptable options - so I'll still be true to the pattern regardless of which I choose.

March_2008_072

Here's an over-exposed close-up of the sock.  This one actually shows the colors in a more true state.  But that's all I have for you tonight.  I really should go knit some more.  I'd like to get the leg and the heel done by tomorrow night.  Wish me luck!

Beware the Ides of March

Since I finished the socks last night, I felt that I must immediately cast on for my next project.  So much for completing another project on the WIP list.  I have a 10-mile hike with the Boy Scouts today and I really wanted to be able to try my hand at knitting and hiking just to say I did it.  Unfortunately, the socks I have on the needles require that I actually pay attention to them (which is why #2 and #3 have been sitting idle for so long).

  1. Knitting Central's Sock Club Skip Along Socks by Laura Hein Eckel
  2. Another Knitting Central Designer - Danni Conway's Lacy Spring  Socks
  3. Knit Picks Almost Argyle Socks

None of these are simple enough to allow me to supervise middle school boys while hiking and knitting.  There was only one thing to do, right?  I immediately cast on for a second pair of mindless self-striping socks with leftover Regia sock yarn for my nephew who adores handknit socks.  This time, these will be all stockinette just to simplify things.  Other than that, they'll look pretty much the same as the first pair.

I'm justified in casting on for a new project, right?  You're with me on this one, aren't you?

You're not?  Who cares about you anyway.  It's all about me.

Almost Completed Argyles

I made great progress on my Argyle Socks today.  It was a very busy day and I knit during a meeting and at tonight's book club.  Unfortunately I had to spend 2 hours in the car driving to and from the airport to pick up my lost luggage from last weekend.  Otherwise, I'm sure I could have finished these socks.

March_2008

Never fear, I'm almost done.  I anticipate a Finishing Friday FO tomorrow.

And here's Wilma barking at her squeaky toy from Jane.  She's more interested in her toy than my knitting.

Folk Solks - a Future Project

And as long as I'm sharing recent pattern purchases with you, I found this Leisure Arts pattern when I was home.  It's call Sock Hop and they are the folk solks that match the Philosopher's Wool sweaters.  This might be the place for me to start.  These seem a lot less intimidating than an oversized boxy sweater.

Complementary Socks

I forgot to show you Susan's great socks.  These were from a class she took at Knitting Central

February_2008_e_007

I love the color patterns.  If you look closely, you'll see that the patterns are not identical.  They're not meant to be.  They're complementary socks.  I think they're amazing!  I love the color choice Susan used.

Why I Love a Good Commute

Every time I take the train into the city, I have the same reaction.  I miss my commute.  Not because I love spending time on the train with thousands of people I don't know (and therefore thousands of potential new best friends), but because of the quality knitting time.  I didn't have the right WIP to take with me on the train (the Scandinavian Mittens, while the right size, tend to shed with the white fuzzy yarn and the alpaca, too.  The Baby Blanket didn't fit inside my purse.  So, I decided to do the only rational thing I could.  I started a new project.

January_2008_j_001

I cast on 64 sts on a US Size 1 Turbo Addis (Magic Loop method) and began knitting my Knitting Central Sock Club Socks that just arrived in the mail.  You can barely make out the pattern, but it's very nice.  This is going to be an easy sock to knit up as I've already memorized the repeats.  But those other projects do beg for my attention, so I dont' think this will get my undivided attention.  It will be good transportation knitting, though and I definitely will need a lot of that in the very near future.

The Knitting Time Trials

I decided to test my knitting speed.  I got my project ready.  Revved my engines.  Started the timer.  And away I knit.

Culinary_capers_006

BF is so good to me, so I picked up 3 more skeins of the Lobster Pot Cashmere in the Old Silver Beach colorway, my US Size 5 Turbo Addis and began knitting another pair of bed socks for him.  I knit with no interruptions (except for one mistake I had to repair) and timed myself.  I counted up the stitches.  I did pretty well.  I won't give you the details since the contest is still open (if you haven't entered, check out the contest HERE).

I will encourage you to time yourself.  It's fun.  It's a totally useless piece of knitting trivia to have about yourself, other than to post something on your blog and have a general idea of your knitting speed.

What's your knitting speed in S.P.M. (stitches per minute)?

How Do I Love Thee? Let Me Count the Stitches.

December_2007_312

In my household, everyone gets socks and underwear under the tree.  It's sort of a running joke with my kids.  When they ask me what I got them for Christmas, I always reply "The traditional socks and underwear".  This year, BF was home sick with the flu the week before Christmas which hindered my stealth knitting time and I didn't get the chance to knit his socks.  Instead I gifted him the yarn and needles which led to quite the look of surprise.  Late last night, though, I managed to finish his Christmas socks - just in time to call it a night.  Of course, the heater was finally repaired, so they weren't as desperately needed.  They were still greatly appreciated for the man of my life who has cold feet ice cube feet.

December_2007_314

They're a perfect fit!  These socks are the best sleeping socks for the man who has cold feet.  I used 2.5 skeins of Lobster Pot cashmere and US Size 5 Turbo Addi's - 40" length and knit them up in the Magic Loop method.  Quick and easy gratification.  I've often wondered how many stitches are in a pair of socks.  Granted, these were done in worsted weight wool so they have far fewer stitches than other socks I've knit in fingering weight yarn.  But still, I'm curious.  Won't you help me figure this out?

Sunday, December 09, 2007

"Red," She Said.

I finished my second pair of the Knitting Central Sock Club socks by Danni - called Cables, Cables Everywhere.  I could barely contain my excitement, so I wore them mere seconds after finishing them.  Here they are all ready to go to dinner.

Good Hiking Socks

Today was a chilly December morning in Connecticut, but our Boy Scout Troop had a hike planned for the Aspetuck Land Trust's Trout Brook Valley.  It turns out it was a great day for hiking and Primogeniture and I even packed our civilian MREs for lunch.

December_2007_009

See Primogeniture's hat?  We bought it at the store today, but I'd love to find a pattern to knit one of these.  It seems that all the teenagers are wearing them and I'd like to knit a few myself.  If you know what they're called or where I can find a pattern - please leave me word.

I wore my official Boy Scout socks on the hike, but I would like to have some great handknit socks for hiking in the future.  At home tonight with a great movie - Mel Brook's To Be or Not to Be - I managed to turn two heels and even knit half a gusset on my second pair of Knitting Central Sock Club socks.  I really want to finish these up so I can start the December socks.

My New Knitting Central Sock Club Package Has Arrived!

It's a cold, rainy, dreary day in Connecticut but it just became a whole lot sunnier because my latest installment for the Knitting Central Sock Club arrived in the mail today.  I'm so excited.  It's an original design by fab teacher/designer Lynn Wilson and made with Sheep Shop Yarn Company silk wool blend yarn.  The socks are called Cables & Ribs Ladies' Bed Socks.  As if the pattern and yarn weren't special enough, Cynthia included a list of the Knitting Central Goddesses' favorite sock books.  There is also a cute little stack of Creative Paper Works post-it notes to keep track of your place on a pattern.  Thanks for the great gifts Cynthia!  Thanks for the amazing pattern Lynn!

November_2007_102_2

If you're a member of the Knitting Central Sock Club, what color is your sock yarn?  Mine is a solar orange explosion.  In case you were wondering what I think about orange on my feet, look at Wilma and the family Crocs in the mudroom.

November_2007_100

Somebody's ready to go for a walk.  But first I think I need to swing by Knitting Central and pick up some US Size 4 dpns so I can get cracking.  What joy!  What bliss!  What will they think of next?

Red Tree, Red Socks

Here's a picture of my neighbor's brilliant red tree.  I voted it the best tree in town.  It peaked on Thanksgiving.

November_2007_056

I managed to knit 5 more rows on my red Cables, Cables Everywhere socks.  Progress, yes.  But not enough to show.  I hope you had a great day.  I made my Chicken Dumpling Soup - but used the turkey bones to make my own homemade soup stock.  Yum.  I just love Thanksgiving leftovers.

Note:  Here's the link my Chicken Dumpling Soup.  Just substitute turkey stock  and meat for the chicken stock and meat.

Sock Club Progress

This past week I spent most of my knitting time with James working on the leg of the 2nd sock for the Knitting Central Sock Club socks.  I found this easier to knit while chatting than the Sublime Pixie Jacket (which requires focus to detail).  I'm making a red pair of Danni's Cables, Cables Everywhere and I'm loving them to pieces.

November_2007

I can tell already that this is going to be a favorite pair of socks.  They'll probably get a lot of wear during the holiday season this year.  In January 2008 you'll be able to get the pattern from Danni.

Mini Magic Loop Lesson

James and I spent some quiet knitting time in the afternoon.  I had a few DVDs that we watched - one was the Philosopher's Wool Two Handed Fair Isle knitting and the other was Lucy Neatby's Sock Techniques DVD.  Both were very informative (although I confess I dozed off during the first).  I was inspired to give James a quick tutorial on the Magic Loop method.  So I grabbed two pairs of Turbo Addis in a 40" long US size 2 and some remnant sock yarn.  We each cast on 24 sts and away we knit.

November_2007_james_fibre_alive_043

James was a natural at it.  In just this small sample, he had perfectly mastered the technique.  I continued on until I had an entire miniature sock shown next to a quarter to give you an idea of its size.

November_2007_james_fibre_alive_046

This could start a whole Miniature Christmas Stocking craze!  Wait.  I just remembered that really long list of UFOs and WIPs.  Drat.

Stopped in My Tracks

BF and I met his college roommates and spouses for dinner at Craftsteak in Manhattan tonight.  Althought I wanted to bring my US Size 11 needles and 2-3 skeins of chunky yarn, my evening bag really didn't have enough room for all that yarn and needles.  So I brought my red Koigu and my Knitting Central Sock Club socks.

Unfortunately, I just grabbed my Go Knits pouch and left.  I didn't bother to check and see what was in the bag, namely the pattern.  This sock has a unique heel, and since I forgot the pattern, I was stopped in my tracks halfway through my commute.  I also neglected to pack the second skein of yarn, so I couldn't start on the second sock either.  I guess I was supposed to just sit and do nothing.

Solid Red Cables Cables Everywhere

I loved Danni's Cables, Cables Everywhere sock pattern for the Knitting Central Sock Club so much that I cast on a second pair.  This time I chose a solid red Koigu KPM and I'm very happy with the results

I always need a small sock project to take with me on the go - so this sock pattern was just the ticket for my Go Knits pouch.

Presenting a FO for my Sock Club

Despite the busy weekend, I did manage to squeeze in some knitting time and finish my Knitting Central Sock Club socks.

These are wonderful socks and Koigu is so squishy and comfy that I can confess I'm thrilled autumn is upon us so I can start wearing all my warm woolen socks again.

Rooftop Knitting

I was on one of the beautiful rooftop gardens of Rockefeller Center today and who could resist posing for a knitting picture with this scenery.  It was amazing.

First Finished Sock

I finished my first sock for the Knitting Central Sock Club.  I really liked the way it turned out.
