American Girl Doll Simple Prayer Shawl – Vertical

Materials:
1 skein – Lion Brand Micro Spun yarn or sport weight alternative
US Size 5 straight needles
Gauge: 4x4 inches = 22 sts wide by 24 sts high
Difficulty: Very Easy - Beginner
Dimensions: approximately 5.5 inches wide by 17.5 inches long
Directions: Cast on 32 stitches.
GARTER STITCH BORDER – TOP
Knit every row creating a garter stitch band for 8 rows (this will create 4 garter ridges).
STOCKINETTE PANEL
ODD ROWS (RIGHT SIDE or stockinette) – Knit across
EVEN ROWS (WRONG SIDE or reverse stockinette) - Knit 5 (Place stitch marker to note edge of border.), Purl across to last 5 sts. (Place stitch marker to note edge of border.) Knit 5
Repeat until your prayer shawl is approximately 17 inches long.
GARTER STITCH BORDER –BOTTOM
Repeat the Garter Stitch Border. Knit every row creating a garter stitch band for 8 rows (this will create 4 garter ridges).
FINISHING
Bind off all 30 stitches.
Weave in any loose yarn.
OPTIONAL FRINGE
If you prefer, cut off several pieces of yarn in 5-inch strips for fringe. Fold 2 pieces of yarn in half for each bit of fringe. Space the fringe evenly along triangular edges of shawl. Pull through the bottom row of the shawl with a crochet hook and then pull through the loop of the fringe. Pull tight. Trim fringe.
