American Girl Doll Shawl with Garter Stitch Stripes

Westport, CT

Materials:
1 skein – Lion Brand Micro Spun yarn
US Size 5 straight needles

Gauge: in Stockinette st: 4x4 inches = 22 sts wide by 24 sts high

Dimensions: approximately 5.5 inches wide by 17.5 inches long

Directions: Cast on 32 stitches.

A - GARTER STITCH BOTTOM BORDER

Rows 1-6: Knit across. Knit every row creating a garter stitch band. This should create 3 garter stitch ridges (plus the cast on edge). You will end with the RS facing.

B - SHORT STOCKINETTE PANEL (first and last panel)

Row 7: ODD ROWS – Right Side (RS): Knit across

Row 8: EVEN ROWS - Wrong Side (WS): Knit 5, Purl across to last 5 sts. Knit 5

Rows 9-14: Repeat rows 7 and 8 three more times. This should give you 4 ridges in your garter stitch band on the edge. End after finishing the wrong side row

C - GARTER STITCH STRIPES

Rows 15 - 20: Knit across. Knit every row creating a garter stitch band. End with RS facing. This should create 3 garter stitch ridges.

D - REGULAR STOCKINETTE PANEL (5 center panels)

Row 21: EVEN ROWS - Wrong Side (WS): Knit 5, Purl across to last 5 sts. Knit 5

Row 22: ODD ROWS – Right Side (RS): Knit across

Row 23-34: Repeat rows 21 and 22 six more times. End with right side facing. This should give you 7 ridges in your garter stitch band on the edge.

REPEAT PATTERNS

Repeat sections C and D four more times.
Repeat section B once
Repeat section A once

FINISHING

Bind off all 32 stitches.
Weave in any loose yarn.

OPTIONAL FRINGE

If you prefer, cut off several pieces of yarn in 5-inch strips for fringe. Fold 2 pieces of yarn in half for each bit of fringe. Space the fringe evenly along triangular edges of shawl. Pull through the bottom row of the shawl with a crochet hook and then pull through the loop of the fringe. Pull tight. Trim fringe.
