Simple Horizontal Prayer Shawl
Assumption Parish, Westport, CT
Materials:
2 skeins – Lion Brand Homespun yarn
US Size 13 - 40” long circular needles. (This will NOT work on straight needles).
Difficulty Level - Very easy – beginner knitter
Gauge: 4x4 inches = 8 sts across by 12 sts high w/ US Size 13 needles
Dimensions: approximately 5 feet wide by 20 inches tall
Note: This prayer shawl is knit horizontally – so you will be knitting 120 sts (the width) for about 20 inches (the height).
DIRECTIONS
Cast on 120 stitches
GARTER STITCH BORDER – TOP
Knit every row creating a garter stitch band for 10 rows (this will create 5 garter ridges).
STOCKINETTE PANEL
ODD ROWS (RIGHT SIDE “RS” - Stockinette) – Knit across
EVEN ROWS (WRONG SIDE “WS” – Reverse Stockinette) - Knit 10 (Place stitch marker to note edge of border.), Purl across to last 10 sts. (Place stitch marker to note edge of border.) Knit 10
Repeat these 2 rows until your prayer shawl is approximately 18 inches tall from cast on edge.
GARTER STITCH BORDER –BOTTOM
Repeat the Garter Stitch Border. Knit every row creating a garter stitch band for 10 rows (this will create 5 garter ridges).
FINISHING
Bind off all 120 stitches.
Weave in any loose yarn.
OPTIONAL FRINGE
If you prefer, cut off several pieces of 6-8 inches for fringe. Knot 2 strands together. Space fringe evenly along edges of prayer shawl. Trim fringe.
